After many of his colleagues died in Afghanistan in a helicopter crash in 2005 during Operation Red Wings,
He began long-distance running to boost money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
The Foundation provides college scholarships and donations to the children of fallen special operations soldiers.
In strength challenges, including the Badwater Ultramarathon 3x times, has enabled David to raise more than US$2 million for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
Marathon and Ultramarathon Running
Goggins tried to take part in the Badwater Ultramarathon as a fundraiser but was told by the organisers that he had to take part in an ultramarathon as it was an invitation event.
In 2005, Goggins participated in the San Diego One Day, a 24-hour ultramarathon at Hospitality Point San Diego.
He completed 101 miles in 19 hours and 6 minutes. He also completed the Las Vegas Marathon in a time that qualified him for the Boston Marathon.
Goggins was invited to the Badwater 135 in 2006, where he finished fifth overall.
Three months after completing his first Badwater ultramarathon in 2006, Goggins took part in the Ultraman World Championship in Hawaii.
He finished second in the event, which was hosted by the World Triathlon Federation. He also competed in the Hurting 100 in Hawaii.
In 2007, he posted his best result at Badwater 135 and finished third. Over the next two years, Goggins competed in 14 ultra and long-distance races, nine of which finished in the top five.

In 2020, he ran the Moab 240 Ultramarathon and finished second with a time of 63 hours, 21 minutes and 95 minutes, behind the winner Michele Graglia.
